Board Development Service

'Improving your Board's effectiveness'

About the Service

The performance of the Board sets the standard for any organisation. Sir John Harvey-Jones described this pivotal role another way - "The very essence of every Board's role is to create tommorow's company out of today's" and, "If the Board is not taking the company purposely into the future, who is?".

Despite these exhortations many talented individual directors, Chairs and managing directors remain dissatisfied with their collective ability to add value within the Boardroom. Too often Boards, whether corporate or not for profit, lapse into ineffectual 'tallking shops', or 'doing business with ourselves' as Jack Welch, former CEO of GE so aptly described this Board phenomenoon.

The Scottish Director Development Centre's Board Development Service provides help to Board directors to clarify their individual roles and responsibilities and tramsform their collective performance within the Boardroom. The service is independent, confidential and delivered by a team who have extensive BVoardroom experience both in the corporate, SME and not for profit sectors. Typically the Board Development Service will be briefed by the Chair in advance of the assignment to provide an impartial view, adn also to discuss ways forward for improved governance and Board processes.

Board Development applies to:

  • The design of induction programmes for new directors
  • Establishing remuneration policies
  • Building collaborative relationships with stakeholders
  • Determining board training and development needs
  • Designing the audit committee function
  • Clarifying the role of the non-executive director

A Quality Service

Our Board Development Service helps:

  • Corporate Boards of established and growing companies - both listed and unlisted
  • Boards within family owned/directed companies, and those with dispersed shareholdings
  • Supervisory Boards of Non-governmental organisations.
  • Directors and Trustees of organisations limited by guarantee.
  • Organisations incorporated by charter or statute.

Facilitation to the Board requires considerable sensitivity to the needs and dynamics of the individuals involved and the expectations of the owners; it is not easy to break the constraints of time and tradition which so often work against the Board's ability to express visionary leadership. Our Board Development Service can help add real value tot eh workings of a Board by helping directors make wiser decisions, about key issues at the right time. Our service can now work with you to ensure that the few hours spent in the Boardroom each month maximises the talents of individual directors and focuses on collective accountability.
