About the Service
The IoD’s learning journeys offer delegates the unique opportunity and experience to appreciate
the way that other companies in other countries and cultures do business. They are ways to start
or expand company activities overseas, gain an in-depth understanding of potential market
opportunities abroad or learn new techniques in management and leadership from others.
In 2006, the IoD will be leading a Learning Journey to Scandinavia – Sweden and Finland – when
delegates will be able to meet with, learn from, identify and establish relationships with companies
in the region. Host companies in the two countries will include well known international
companies, for example, ABB, AtlasCopco, SonyEricsson, and Nokia City and others which are
successful in their own right or as part of other international ventures. All host company meetings
will be attended by senior board executives in the host organisation and in addition there will be
briefings from both UK and Overseas Trade organisations.
The Learning Journey will last 8 days inclusive starting on a Friday and ending the following Saturday.
Benefits of the service can include the opportunity to obtain first-hand perspectives on new markets, to assess the
potential impact of doing business overseas, meeting and interacting with hosts and co-delegates in an intimate and
enriching setting and acquiring new knowledge about becoming an even more successful company director.
How the Service works
Our Learning Journeys consist of meetings with host companies lasting c. 3 hours and always include introductions, a
presentation by the host on a previously agreed topic typically about trade, technology, people management and the key issues
that the host company is addressing, detailed discussions with Learning Journey delegates and a tour of the host’s site and
office, factory or logistics facilities. Visits are tailored wherever possible to the specific interests of Learning Journey delegates
who will have been fully briefed in Scotland before their departure. The visits introduce Learning Journey delegates to world class
people, companies and facilities and help delegates to understand the key to these companies’ success.
